Our Story

A desire to produce premium handcrafted red wines with true varietal and regional characteristics, saw Dominic & Krystina Morris establish Pondalowie Vineyards at Bridgewater on Loddon, near Bendigo, in 1997. There they planted 13 acres of Shiraz, 5 acres Tempranillo, 5 acres Cabernet Sauvignon, 0.5 acre Malbec and 1 acre of Viognier. Their vineyards are farmed using organic principals and are pruned by hand. Yields are restricted to 1-1.5 tonnes per acre, maximising flavour & concentration in the resultant wines. In exceptional years additional fruit is also sourced from premium grape growers in the Heathcote wine region.

Alongside running Pondalowie with wife Krystina, Dominic also worked in Portgual from 1995 to 2011 as chief winemaker for leading Portuguese producer Quinta do Crasto and was proud to have helped them achieve their recognition as one of Portugal’s best table wine producers.

With the recent purchase of a farm at Bambra, nestled in the beautiful Otway ranges, Dominic & Krystina will soon fulfil another lifelong dream; to grow and produce cool-climate Pinot Noir. The new Pinot Noir vineyard will offer another dimension to the range of wines produced under their two brands: Pondalowie and Pinga Wines.

“We bought a case of this wine in August, great wine. (2015 Shiraz).”

“Just a quick note to say we opened a bottle of your 2005 Shiraz tonight. I noted in your tasting notes on the label you said "Enjoy now or over the next 8 years." It is now almost 12 years since you made it and I can tell you it has lasted extremely well past the 8 year mark. The colour is good, being a deep rich red with only minimal brown at the edge. The Shiraz nose is still fresh with the vanilla of the American oak apparent. The wine has settled well into a beautiful, smooth Shiraz fruit flavour on the middle palate and a soft tannin finish. Beautifully balanced. A superb wine. Thank God for Stelvins caps. They have allowed your wine to age very slowly and to allow us to enjoy it as I describe above this evening. Keep up the good work. (2005 Shiraz)“

“We’ve just opened a 1998 MT and it is wonderful so we thought we’d better share our appreciation”

MM, Melbourne July 2016

“Had a bottle of your 2002 Shiraz last night as I re-discovered it in my cellar. Was a bit worried that it might be passed the "use by date". Silly me, it was excellent. Lots of fruit, very good colour and a pleasure to drink. On the back label states "over the next 10 years". You are being conservative. Well done.”
